Artificial Insemination - Gotlands
Sheep have a torqued reproductive system making vaginal artificial insemination risky. The preferred method is to insert the semen directly into the ewe's 2 uterine horns by laporoscopy.

Surgical cradles made by Jeff. They required a bit of modification on the hoof restraints but they worked beautifully. Using 2 cradles allowed us to finish 31 ewes in less than 4 hours.
Our prep team, Helen & Gail, were meticulous in the care they gave the ewes in sanitizing the surgical site.
Tracy and MaryBeth provided the surgical assist to Glen. They were an exceptional team of professionals.
We had quite a crowd on hand! In addition to the farms with animals to be inseminated, we had neighbors come by to help and the Josephine County fair livestock coordinator showed up and worked as hard as the rest of us!
We had only one Gotland ewe that did not take with AI, making our success rate 97%!!
We are now on the countdown for lambs with an expected lambing date of April 22, 2010.
